Mod Podge Lighters

Necessary items:
  • Lighters
  • Mod Podge
  • 1-inch foam brushes
  • Newspaper or magazines

The finished product for this craft looks like these:

Time necessary: 30 minutes
Attention required: Medium

Mod podging lighters is pretty simple and is one of the quicker crafts/homemade gifts I know how to make.

Instructions:
1. Look through magazines for what you might want to put on your lighters. I look for interesting pictures or phrases. Or initials. For this one, I bought a lighter to match the color in the picture.
2. Take the barcode stickers and safeties off the lighters (unless this is a gift for children . . . ? be safe, please!). I usually use a key to get safeties off -- look out for where that little piece of metal flings.
(yes, I had just spilt rum and coke on my sweat pants.)

3. The next step is to actually mod podge whatever bits of paper you chose onto the lighter. Grab your foam brush, mod podge, lighter, and paper. I usually work on top of some newspaper as well.  Mod podge is a fabulous product, acting as both a glue and a sealant. When it comes to the primary layer, I like to use more basic versions of mod podge -- essentially, I wait to use my sparkle or glitter mod podge for the outer layers. Use either matte, satin, or gloss mod podge for gluing your paper down.

For large pieces of paper, I put the mod podge on the paper, then press the paper to the lighter (as pictured below). For individual letters or other small pieces of paper, I prefer to paint a thin layer of mod podge on the lighter, then place my pieces as desired.

After you've placed your paper on the lighter, make sure to press all of the air bubbles out from underneath.

4. Wait 10-15 minutes for the glue layer of mod podge to dry, then paint your first sealant layer of mod podge on top of the paper. If you bought specialty mod podge (like sparkle), this is the time to get it out. I generally paint in downward, even strokes so the glue dries nicely.

5. Two outer layers is generally enough. Don't put more than three outer layers or the mod podge is more likely to peel. You will know when one layer is dry because mod podge dries clear. Don't take too much time making a masterpiece. Like all lighters, these wear and become dirty. They're fun for as long as the fluid in them lasts, so enjoy!
